Last year in his first ever year of Formula One Motor Racing, Lewis Hamilton the young British driver narrowly missed being world champion by just one point. This is an incredible achievement, and has never happened in the history of Formula 1 Motor Racing.

Lewis Hamilton has been groomed by McLaren since he approached Ron Dennis and asked if he could drive for them when he was only 10 years old. Like Tiger Woods in golfing, Lewis Hamilton is black and statistically underprivileged, but he has a strong determination, and a father who works closely with him, guiding him along all the way. What belief in himself he must have had even then to ask the question.

Yes, both Lewis Hamilton and Tiger Woods have raw talent, but it is the mental strength, and the belief as well as the strong family support that makes Lewis Hamilton the driver he is. He started as a very young kart driver and started winning races initially as he was so small and light that he had an advantage, but he was still winning against much older and more experienced drivers. It was this ability that kept McLaren interested in Lewis Hamilton throughout his karting career, and which prompted them to sponsor him and groom him to eventually drive for the McLaren Formula 1 team.

There are so many “if only’s” as to why Lewis Hamilton did not win in his first season, and not all of them come down to his driving ability. If he had not been kept out so long on slick tyres when he went off the track in the pit lane and did not finish then he would have won. If in his last race he had kept his head with wild overtaking and just aimed to be in the first 3 he would have won. Also if in the last race, he had not lost his ability to change gear for so long then he would have won and so on.

However, you cannot take the magnitude of his achievement away from Lewis Hamilton. He is an exceptionally talented motor racing driver, who is also very charming. Just look at the videos on this site about Lewis Hamilton, especially the Top Gear interview and driving where he nearly got the fastest time of all the drivers, but when he went out on the track it was not only wet, but there was oil on the track as well.

So will he win the title this year, and start with a win in Melbourne? Not long to wait, the season starts now and we wish Lewis Hamilton and all other Formula 1 Motor Racing drivers and fans a great season.
